Ghana is politically stable, English-speaking and open for business - and still ranks among the world's harder places to start one. The World Bank, UKGCC, IMANI and the US State Department converge on the same obstacles: access to finance, duplicated taxes, permit bribery, power costs and bureaucratic discretion. Here's the unfiltered map.
The capital gates
Any enterprise with foreign participation must register with the investment authority after incorporation. A joint venture needs ~$200,000 minimum capital plus a Ghanaian partner holding at least 10%; 100% foreign ownership needs ~$500,000. Sector rules stack on top: fintech licences demand integrity capital with the Bank of Ghana; mining, oil and power carry prescriptive local-content requirements. The 2026 GIPA Act simplifies procedures - but budget for delays anyway.
The facilitation-fee economy
The 5-day registration SLA is real on paper. Research finds completion in days with unofficial payments versus up to five months without - GHS 50-1,000 per desk, GHS 2,000-20,000 per registration. Two-thirds of firms report paying unofficial fees for port clearance or permits. The GRA's preliminary tax assessment and 30%-upfront dispute payment add cash-flow shocks newcomers never model.
The workforce wahala
Five-year builders describe it bluntly: artisans who say 'yes' without understanding, zero initiative, mistakes a child wouldn't make - at 200 cedis a day. The perfectionist diaspora founder either learns extreme patience and micromanagement or breaks. Training systems, not talent, are the gap: the few firms that drill SOPs get world-class service out.
Rules that keep you alive
1. Remote income first - never relocate on savings alone; savings deplete, income compounds. 2. Two directors, company secretary, auditor, GRA, SSNIT, assembly permits - line them up via a local lawyer before you land. 3. Never fund remote farms or builds you can't monitor - unsupervised money is a donation; photo updates are staged. 4. Verify every intermediary twice - including family. 5. Start modest, outside Airport/East Legon rents, until cash flow is proven.
